Made possible through a grant from the Heart of West Michigan United Way, this spring The Delta Project created an edit training course for kids from disadvantaged communities. Over a six-week period, students were taught video editing skills on Adobe Premiere Pro. Antonio, a Delta Project student, took part in the training course, and in addition to learning digital editing, he showed an interest in sports and physical activity.

Not only is Antonio a running back on his high school football team, but he also recently became a cyclist. Something he wouldn’t have imagined. Or seen himself becoming. The Delta Project co-founder, Joel Van Kuiken, started riding with Antonio early in the cycling season. Soon enough Antonio participated in a weekly bicycle training race at Grattan Raceway and then rode the 40-mile course in the MSU Gran Fondo in late September.

Antonio’s story has led to interest in creating a cycling team. Working with Vie13 in Rockford, Michigan, Antonio and Joel provided design input for a cycling kit that represents the social and restorative justice approach of The Delta Project.

Sponsorships are available, but the kit currently features the Delta Project and the partners who are supporting the ongoing work of the mission.

One of the sponsors, Beyond Category Coaching, a cycling coach based in Denver Colorado, is providing free coaching services to any Delta Project kids who join the cycling team.

If you are interested in participating in or sponsoring the team, contact Joel at joel@thedeltaproject.co
